The head gasket keeps the passages sealed as oil travels between the cylinder head and the engine block. If your car is burning too much oil, you may have a leak in the head gasket that is preventing it from properly sealing the passages. A blown head gasket can allow coolant and oil to mix, and reduce it's ability to cool the engine properly.
